30 YEARS WITH 2 DANES · STORY 03

The Sectional Fit.
But What About the Piano?

A sectional can fit in a room and still get in the way of using it. In this story from our 30th anniversary interviews, a delivery went smoothly until the customers realized what reaching their grand piano would involve.

A large room. A favorite sectional.

A longtime customer and his wife came into 2 Danes looking for a sectional. They found one on the showroom floor that they liked, and they were confident it would fit their large room.

The floor sample was available, and the team could bring it over quickly. So far, so good.

“Are there more pieces?”

After two sections had been carried inside, the customer’s wife asked whether there were more pieces to come.

There was one more.

And the sectional did fit. It went into the room exactly as it should. The trouble was not the size of the room. It was what the customers needed to reach on the other side of the sofa.

The piano was still there. The path was not.

To play their brand-new grand piano, the customers would have had to step onto the sectional’s seat and climb over its back.

Not a very practical way to begin a practice session.

The sectional came back to the store with us. The customers chose something else, and everyone was able to laugh about it. It is one of those deliveries that stayed with us long after the furniture decision was sorted out.

Fit is about more than the footprint.

The useful part of the story is simple: measure the furniture, but also think about how you will move through and use the room.

Before choosing a sectional, consider its overall width and depth, the position of a chaise or return, and the routes you use every day. Can you still reach the doors, get to a favorite chair, and use the other things staying in the room?

Where a piece reclines or opens, check the space it needs in use, not only when it is closed. Doorways and the delivery route deserve attention, too.

And, of course, leave yourself a way to get to the piano.

Bring us the room, not just the sofa measurements.

Photos and a simple sketch with measurements give us a better picture of your space. Include the pieces you plan to keep and anything you need to reach or walk around.

That is the practical side of our focus on furniture design, quality, and function. A piece needs to work for the people living with it.

A few good questions.

Can a sectional fit in a room but still be the wrong choice?

Yes. In this story, the sectional fit its intended space but blocked practical access to a grand piano. Think about movement and access as well as the furniture’s dimensions.

What should I measure besides the sofa itself?

Consider the room, doorways, delivery route, nearby furniture, and everyday walking paths. Check the space needed for any reclining or opening features on the specific piece you are considering.

We always tell people to make sure they measure before they purchase something and have it delivered.

It was a very good customer of ours, man and wife. They were in here and looking for a sectional, and they found one on the floor that they liked.

And we said, “Yeah, you sure that size?”

“Oh yeah, we have a large room. That’s no problem.”

“Yeah, we can sell you the floor sample, and let me just ask the guys. I think we can deliver it in half an hour.”

Started to carry in the pieces, and after we had brought in two of them, the wife of the house said to me, “Are there more pieces?”

Yeah, I said, “There’s one more.”

Oh, she didn’t have to be nervous about it, because it fitted perfectly. There was nothing wrong. It fitted in the way it should.

But there was this little hiccup that if they wanted to play their brand-new grand piano, they would have to step in the seat of the sofa and crawl over the back of the sofa to get to their new piano. And we could see that in the long haul, that doesn’t really work.

So, we took the sofa, the sectional, with us back again, and they chose something else. And they were very happy, and they were laughing themselves, too.

This is a recollection of one customer experience, not a statement of current delivery times or return policies.

THE FURNITURE IS BETTER IN PERSON.

Let’s make room for the way you live.

Bring photos and measurements to our White Bridge Road showroom. We will talk through what needs to fit, what needs to stay accessible, and what makes sense for your room.
